G1 Metropolitan success for yearling purchase Land Legend

Yearling purchase Land Legend captured a thrilling renewal of the G1 James Squire Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick on Saturday to stamp himself as one of the leaders of his division for owner Bon Ho’s Legend Racing Pty Ltd.

Sent off the third favourite for trainer Chris Waller, the son of Galileo locked horns with Zardozi early in the straight and in a thrilling finish, outnosed his rival for a narrow score. The pair pulled over three lengths clear of the third Unusual Legacy.

With that win, his third overall for over A$750,000 in earnings, Land Legend cleared the first ballot clause for the G1 Melbourne Cup in a month’s time.

“That’s unbelievable,” said jockey Reece Jones. “When he was a little bit tardy into stride and a little bit further back than where I wanted to be I thought it was just going to be a little bit tougher. I just had to keep my cool, let him build into it.

“I knew when I found the back of Zardozi, I’d be right in the finish – (she) took me everywhere I needed to go. He was terrific and tough. Credit to the Waller camp, they’ve got him absolutely spot on for today.

“It’s been unreal for everyone that’s helped me get to where I am. I’m just really thankful to Bon Ho and the Waller team for keeping their faith in me and letting me ride him today.”

Land Legend was bred in France by LNJ Foxwoods and offered through Ecurie des Monceaux at the 2021 Arqana October Sale (pictured), where he was purchased by Avenue Bloodstock on behalf of Bon Ho for €100,000.

He was initially trained by James Ferguson, for whom he won at Newcastle and then the Moet & Chandon St Leger at Randwick upon his arrival in Australia.

Land Legend becomes the 102nd G1 winner for Galileo. He is out of the winning Dansili mare Landikusic, a sister to Zoffany.
