Listed Burradon Stakes success for Glittering Legend

Glittering Legend, a yearling purchase on behalf of Bon Ho, continued on his impressive upward trajectory on Friday when taking the Listed Burradon Stakes at Newcastle.

His win opened a high-profile double for Bon Ho, whose colours were later carried to victory by breeze-up purchase Wonder Legend in the £175,000 two-mile handicap.

Fresh off a good win in a competitive conditions race for trainer James Fanshawe at Kempton, Glittering Legend showed plenty of battling qualities under Daniel Muscutt to deny the favourite Bowmark and win in cosy fashion.

”I am absolutely delighted, he’s a star,” said James Fanshawe. “Mark McStay bought him at the Somerville Sale and he’s getting it together now – he’s a really smart horse.

“I said to Dan to get some cover and he came there travelling beautifully. I was just hoping that Dan saw the Gosden horse [Bowmark] up the middle. He’s tough and experienced, and that stood him in good stead. He’s very tenacious, a tough three-year-old. I’ll have to speak to his owner Mr Ho but I’d say plans will revolve around Royal Ascot.”

Now the winner of four races, the Hascombe and Valiant Stud-bred Glittering Legend emulated his half-brother Megallan by winning the Burradon Stakes. They are out of Eastern Belle, a Listed-winning Champs Elysees half-sister to champion Golden Horn.

Glittering Legend (pictured as a yearling) was purchased by Avenue Bloodstock for 67,000gns from the Hascombe and Valiant Stud draft at the 2023 Tattersalls Somerville Sale. He becomes the 24th stakes winner for Darley’s leading young sire Too Darn Hot.

Meanwhile, Wonder Legend set a new track record when storming to victory in the All-Weather Championships Marathon Handicap later on the card. The James Ferguson-trained son of Sea The Stars, who was an Arqana May purchase from Knockanglass Stables, is now the winner of five races.
