‘She looks a freak’ – another impressive G1 for Sun Goddess

Sun Goddess, a £120,000 yearling purchase by Avenue Bloodstock at last year’s Goffs Premier Sale, was slashed in 5/2 favouritism for next year’s 1,000 Guineas after producing yet another scintillating display, this time when running away with the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh.

Her win was her fifth in total for the Coolmore partners and Aidan O’Brien following a similarly dominant display in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes against colts, Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes, Harry’s Half Million by Goffs and her maiden victory in May.

Again partnered by Ryan Moore, Sun Goddess swooped to lead a furlong out and powered clear for a six-and-a-half length win.

“She looks a freak, doesn’t she?,” said Aidan O’Brien. “Everything she has done has been freakish. She was up to seven furlongs today and soft ground. She’s a big, powerful and strong filly by Sioux Nation. The Cheveley Park is there in two weeks, we’ll see. She’s coming out of her races like she isn’t even having races. She has an awful lot of natural class and she’s a big filly. You’d imagine looking at her that she should be a much better filly next year. She’s just natural really. We didn’t know what was going to happen but it’s incredible really.”

Ryan Moore added: “Sun Goddess is a very good filly and has just kept on improving. She’s up to seven furlongs today and has got her ground, and that’s the most impressive she has been. She’s thriving. She does everything lovely, she relaxed and was in a beautiful rhythm. She was very smooth and when I asked her to quicken she opened up very impressively. She couldn’t have done any more.”

Sun Goddess races for Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Westerberg. She was bred by Owenstown Stud out of the Starspangledbanner mare Etoile Bleu, a half-sister to Group 2 winner Gibraltar Blue from the immediate family of the recent Group 1 Prix Jean Prat winner Thesecretadversary.
