‘She’s very good’ – Velozee impresses for Steve Weston in the First Flier
Velozee looked a filly out of the top drawer on Monday when landing the Listed First Flier Stakes at the Curragh, the first juvenile stakes contest of the Irish season.
The Paddy Twomey-trained filly made a winning debut at Cork last month, after which Steve Weston joined the ownership through Avenue Bloodstock. The daughter of Sioux Nation now carries the colours of Gary Matthews and Steve Weston Partnership.
She scored impressively on Monday, with a decisive turn of foot taking her well clear for a three-and-a-half length success.
“She’s very good,” said Billy Lee. “I made no secret of what I thought of her when she went to Cork that day. She was only just ready to run and if she was placed, it was going to be a good run. She got the job done that day.
“She went very well in a gallop at Naas the other day so we came here confident. The main protagonist was there in New Yorker and we had a line through him through Litmus Test.
“She jumped well, was very straightforward, cruised away upsides and was just doing enough in front. She’ll learn again from this.”
Velozee was bred by Grange and Manister House Studs out of Ocean Life, a Territories relation to Group 1 winners Master Of The Seas, Cascadian and Albahr.
